On a previous post about New Green Bo I spoke a bit about Xiao Long Bao dumplings, which seemed to have struck a chord with a number of New Yorkers as to where the best ones can actually be found. I won’t admit to being an expert on these things, but I will say that I know what I like. Shanghai Cuisine on Bayard Street, right next to New Beef King, has some pretty darned good ones as far as I am concerned.

Shanghai Cuisine has a display case that faces the street that showcases some of their dim sum items.
The main kitchen window is open to the street and you can watch them make and steam up the dumplings.

What we came for — the shrimp and pork Xiao Long Bao. They also have crab and pork, as well as purely pork dumplings, but as this was the first time I’ve seen Xiao Long Bao with a Shrimp/Pork mixture in a Shanghainese restaurant.
The dumplings are nice and juicy, but not at all greasy, which I think is due to the addition of Shrimp to the mixture. Rachel pronounced these as very good, and I’d have to agree.
There is a better Shanghai Resturant in Chinatown you should try. The resturant is called Joe’s Shanghai here’s the info http://www.joeshanghairestaurants.com/
The food here is excellent. I like that you can see them cooking in the window. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone, including the very picky eater.
