Dumpling Orgy at King’s Village (UPDATED)

Once again, our intrepid group of foodies headed down to Edison for some serious gut-busting dumplin’ eating at King’s Village, a Beijing-style (Mandarin) restaurant in Edison.

Every February, in celebration of the Chinese New Year, the owners host a month-long “Dumpling Fest” which for a whole $16.95 per person, they feed you jiaozi of all different types until you plead for mercy or explode, whichever comes first.

Sounds great, right? So let’s get on with the gluttony.

The cold appetizer area in the front of the restaurant, with plates and containers of all sorts of weird and delicious things to take home.

King’s Village attracts a decidedly hardcore Chinese crowd.

These were specials that King’s Village had for Chinese New Year. I was made to understand that King’s Village’s cuisine is representative of Beijing and Northern China. We only ordered one of the dishes from this menu. Click on the photo to enlarge. (2010)

The first of the cold appetizers to arrive. This is a cold pork roll, sort of like a pate. (2010)

This is a five spiced mock duck with mushrooms. (2010)

Suddenly things got out of control and the appetizers were landing like Higgins boats at Omaha Beach. Here you can see lotus root salad, spicy tofu skin, seaweed salad, julienne potatoes, pickles, tofu. (2010)

One of the items we ordered off the New Year Menu, a mungbean noodle dish with shredded pork. (2010)

The purple ones which contained a beef mixture were my absolute favorite. (2010)

These orange tinged ones are a combination of Shrimp and Pumpkin. We affectionately named them “Shrumpkins”. (2011)

Yep, you got it, more jiaozi. (2010)

This was a special five spiced tea-smoked chicken dish, served cold, that everyone loved. (2010)

Mmmm. Pork Gelatin! (2010)

“I don’t know if we should eat any more. Aren’t you guys getting FULL?” (2010)

Nope! (2010)

Double nope. (2011)

These Northern-style pan fried pork dumplings were a special order. (2010)

Dessert — fried doughnuts stuffed with lotus bean paste and pancake syrup (front) and a bizzare sticky gooey thing made especially for New Year. (2010)

Sticky Rice with sweet dried fruits (2011)

More appropriate words have never been spoken. Unless you are in bed.

See you next lunar cycle!

Oh my goodness, I was 4 days away from missing out on this event. I had no idea a dumpling fest existed anywhere, let alone just down the road from me. I almost wish I had read this after next Monday so I wouldn’t feel as pressured to go to something so amazing in such short notice.

So it’s one plate per person of the appetizer dumplings then as many as you want main course dumplings?

Does one need reservations to an event such as this?
