Food Porn for a Cause

by Rachel Nash Perlow

A little while ago, one of OTB’s friends in BBQ, Rob Wheaton, asked us to come and check out a catering gig he was doing. It was a fundraiser for his church’s mission for Habitat for Humanity.  A group from the Presbyterian Church of Chatham Township (NJ) is heading to South Dakota this summer to help make improvements at the Cheyenne River Sioux Indian Reservation. The theme for the dinner was Native American foods, and it featured buffalo and salmon, as well as “fry bread.”

The Green Village Fire Department generously donated their building to host the event. What a bucolic setting. This is the view out the kitchen door.

Click on the “Read the rest of this entry” link below for more.

When we arrived, Rob was running a bit behind so I stepped in to help out where I could. Here’s Chef Rob explaining the menu and event to me.

The food for kids featured a taco bar, using Fry Bread as the shell. Plenty of adults helped themselves to the kids food, which also included Buffalo Sliders.

Food for the adults included Crab stuffed Salmon en Croute, as well as Coconut Salmon, Buffalo Chili with Cornbread and Roast Beef with Horseradish sauce.

While all the food was excellent, the purpose of the evening was to raise money for the church’s mission to join the Okiciyapi Tipi Habitat for Humanity. The dinner portion raised over $10,000! Way to go Rob! And, that’s not even including the money raised by the silent auction.

  1. Sounds interesting, although I don’t know if I’d want to eat buffalo! Your blog is fascinating by the way.

Jason, have you attended the annual Crawfish Festival at Sussex County Fair Grounds. Its the first weekend of June ever year, The scene is great, as is the music. But the food, OMG, its all people for New Orleans who drive up and setup booths with food to die for. Here is the link to the festival and the food list. The Etouffee is the best, I bring an extra cooler and containers and buy $100 worth to take home.

We’ve heard of it, and a friend of ours is going this year and wanted us to come, but we have a trip planned at the same time. I’ll leave that weekend open next year. :)
