After a disappointing meal at Watershed, Melissa suggested we take a look at JCT Kitchen, a similar modern Southern-style casual dining restaurant that had been getting raves from many local critics. Wanting to quickly make up for the night before, we headed toward Atlanta’s West Side and hit the restaurant during lunchtime.

JCT Kitchen Menu

This summer-style Shrimp and Grits is one of the best versions of this dish I’ve ever had. The shrimp was cooked absolutely perfect and the creamy grits, while wonderful and buttery, were not over the top rich.

JCT Kitchen’s fried chicken was juicy but I was somewhat disappointed by the fact that the skin was not crispy. However the mac and cheese was utterly perfect, nice and creamy using a white cheddar cheese sauce — it was clearly the “saucepan” rather than the baked style, which always yields more consistent results.

Rachel’s vegetable plate with gnocchi was a real knockout, we were quite impressed by how perfectly cooked these vegetables were and how properly seasoned everything was. A really fresh tasting plate to go with the rich entrees.

The Pulled Pork sandwich was nice and smoky and had a great jus — a whole barbecue restaurant could be opened just on the premise of this one dish.

Coconut Cake with Tres Leches. Outstanding, although quite different from a traditional iced Southern Coconut Cake

These Blueberry Beignets with Creme Fraische had me pining for New Orleans.

Ginger Spice Cake with Lemon Sauce, another big hit.

JCT Kitchen writeup is dead on right .. the food was wonderful and I feel that our choices were equally good there …

Between you taking the pictures, my little point-and-shoot Canon 620, and my Picasa editing, the results told the tale of a most enjoyable day …

Glad you and Rachel came here to Atlanta and had a bit of a view of Southern dining!

Looks great Jason. I know you’ve been on a prior trip, but South City Kitchen is one of my Southern favorites…

Great place. Ate there with my daugther – she had the fried chicken and I had the fish and chips. Delish!

  4. I’m so glad we had your camera, Mel. Would have been really sad if we couldn’t document that meal.

I hate it when you forget stuff at the hotel…

Good food but too loud. Couldn’t carry on a conversation.
