The weather has finally turned nice and summer is just around the corner, and many NJ residents are now engaging in the pastime of going out to the local garden store and picking out seedlings to plant in home gardens. Besides industrial waste and the Sopranos, Jersey is also known for our agriculture (they don’t call us the Garden State without good reason) and particularly our wonderful, juicy tomatoes, which many of us grow in our own back yards.
One of my favorite places to shop for vegetable and herb seedlings is Old Hook Farm, in rural Emerson, which is located in Bergen County only about a half hour away from New York City. Old Hook Farm is the Ne Plus Ultra of garden stores, featuring certified organically grown vegetables from their greenhouse and fields, plus a general store in an 18th century farmhouse featuring all sorts of tasty goodies for sale (albeit at superpremium prices) .

Farmer Bruce Marek, who owns and runs Old Hook Farm with his wife Mariel. Bruce is a great guy to talk to, and will gladly sit down with you for as long as you want to shoot the stuff about planting your veggies for your summer gardens. I’ve found him to be an invaluable resource when consulting him about our own home garden.

Mid May is tomato planting time, and Old Hook has a large variety of Heirloom and Hybrid tomatoes. Old Hook grows 150 varieties of vegetables during the year, many of which are available in seedling and juvenile form ready for you to plant in your own garden.
They’ve also got a very large selection of herbs.
We bought a couple of these Lemon Basil plants, which should go great in an Insalata Caprese this summer.
Purple Sage is in my brain…
The farmhouse general store.
The store has so much gourmet stuff that Martha Stewart would have a field day in here.
All sorts of great baked goods for sale, including breads, pies and cakes.
The fruit sold here is absolutely pristine.
Take a look at these Jersey asparagus!
Organic tomatoes — pricey, but worth every penny.
