Little Richard claims to have “Invented” Rock and Roll, but there can be a pretty good argument in favor of James Brown being the one that perfected it. And whatever you call what he actually did, be it Soul, R&B, Funk, Motown or Roots Rock, he was arguably the best stage performer of the entire 20th Century. There are innumerable tales of people, who later went on to become rock legends, who speak of seeing Brown in his early days.
His so called “black” music moved many in a way in which others did not. Whatever else you can say about his personal life and his foibles, it doesn’t really matter — he will always be the Godfather of Soul, he will always be the hardest working man to ever be in show business, he will always be the most dynamic stage performer that ever lived, and he is definitely the man who defined sexual energy in Rock and Roll. Nobody else’s music sounded like his, nobody else had those grooves, and nobody had that unmistakeable trademark shreik
We could go on listing superlatives about James Brown, but then this would be the longest blog article ever.
We will never see the likes of him again.
