As I’ve gone on record before, I’m a big proponent of instant gratification in dining. If you’re anything like me and my wife, you’ve got a busy schedule and sometimes you end up postponing dinner to the very last minute, and you really don’t want to wait a long time before something hits your stomach or you might inflict bodily harm on someone. In these situations, you got stuff like pizza and fast food, but you also have the option of going to buffet restaurants, where you can just grab a plate and start chowing down.

I’m not a huge fan of buffets in general, because the food tends to stay in the large chafers or steam trays for a very long time and don’t get refilled that often. But Minado, an Asian seafood buffet chain in the NY Metro area (with locations in Queens and Long Island as well as NJ) actually seems to get past that problem because of the high amount of turnover with its sushi and other items. It also manages to attract a significant amount of Asian clientele who tend to be a bit more discerning about their sushi freshness.

The hibachi grill offers a number of different grilled items, such as shrimp, squid, chicken, and my favorite, Korean-style marinated beef shortribs, which come out in an endless supply, piping hot.

This is as close I could get to the bar area with my camera without pissing the management off, unfortunately. Suffice to say there are about 50-60 different sushi and sashimi items at the cold bar and at least 20 different items at the hot area on any given night, not including the Hibachi stuff. On weekends they even have jumbo langoustines and more items in the hot area. Not bad for $24.95 a person.

My first plate, which has some beef shortribs, shitakke mushroom salad and seaweed salad, shrimp on a stick, a few peices of nigiri sushi, and some mussels.

The cold area features things like snow crab legs, oysters and shrimp cocktail, as well as a number of different kind of sashimi salads and ceviche-type things. You can also ask the Sushi chefs working at the cold area to prepare you fresh hand rolls as well.

Do you ever ask a restaurant’s permission before snapping pictures?

  2. The Minado in Atlanta has recently changed hands but looks, from their website, to be very similar to the original .. which I enjoyed tremendously! I love the variety of foods, the abundance of whatever you wish and as often as you wish, and the pristine cleanliness of the place … a true pleasure for a leisurely meal!

If you go at lunch it’s like $16.95 (?) and almost the same menu… Did you try the crepes? and the dessert bar? Almost worth waiting having a late brunch…

Been to Minado in Little Ferry several times and while the food is generally decent, the korean short ribs (kal-bi) is sub par. If you are looking for something more along the lines of genuine kalbi, take a trip to Broad Ave. in Palisades Park.

  5. […] the past, I’ve written about other Asian-style buffet restaurants in New Jersey, such as Minado, in Little Ferry. Recently a new Asian buffet and hibachi restaurant — the similarly named […]
