Columbia is a town very much steeped in Southern tradition and lags behind from a culinary perspective to its more high-tech rival capital city in North Carolina, Raleigh. However, this is not to say that there aren’t some real dining gems to be found in South Carolina’s state capital. One such restaurant I really enjoyed was Gervais and Vine, which is part of a Columbia restaurant group that also owns Mr. Friendly’s and Solstice, both of which are also well-received by the city’s more sophisticated diners.
Gervais and Vine, which is situated in Columbia’s historic “Vista” district is a Wine/Tapas bar which serves a Mediterranean-focused menu and is targeted towards the city’s professionals and more cosmopolitan scene. I happened to stop by on one of the various theme nights that the restaurant is known for — BURGERS. Having not had a decent burger in quite a few months, I was lured in.

The Carte de Burgers for the evening. Oh man this was going to be a difficult choice.

The Bar area is where all the action is and is a great option for single diners.

Okay, i admit, I was staring at these for a while.

Time to have some Zins to go with the 1/2lb of red meat that’s about to hit my system. French Paradox baby!

By now my mouth is absolutely watering.

I started with a Mesclun Salad with Strawberries and goat cheese in a Balsamic vinaigrette, which was very nice indeed.

And a mixed spread platter.

Seared scallops destined for another customer.

These burgers kept flying off the pass. By this point the primal meat eating instinct was in danger of completely taking over my otherwise rational composure.

I ordered the Venison burger with Brie. This is made with locally caught venison from North Carolina.

Now THAT is a burger.

MMMMMMMM. DEER! DIE BAMBI DIE!

Venison Nirvana.

Hey Jay, that Venison burger would be the one I would have ordered. Nice and RED! How do you rate the venison among youve had before? Also arent those areas of the south really good with Deer and Game? You gotta try oppossum soon.
Brandon: because it was Farm-Raised venison it was not as gamey as some of the venison I’ve had before, such as NY state venison. It was just slightly gamey, and was more like bison meat in its flavor, which is what I like. It was a fantastic burger.
I for sure thought you’d go for the turkey burger.
With Wensleydale to boot (I hear it tastes like the moon ;) ). Still, I think I’d have chosen other than the turkey myself, and the venison looks mighty tempting. Two glasses of wine and that thing for 14 bucks- what a deal!!! I spend nearly that at White Manna….
I’ve had Venison sausages but not the burgers.
Be worth a try this weekend when the kids come over, they love trying out new food.
Thanks
Lesley
I love the look of the salads served with the burgers – the burgers look amazing, no arguments there, but so do those salads – I’m guessing coleslaw & some kind of potato salad made with red-skinned potatoes?
I’d love some more info if you can remember.
Thanks!
I believe the potato salad used red potatoes and some finely chopped green pepper and green onion. The other salad is a slaw with both red and regular cabbage as well as carrot.
