After 49 years, we just ponied up and put french drains around my mothers NJ house. I think I spent half my childhood stooped over in the crawl space pumping water, or worrying about it. If you live in a very dry area its probably not a big concern, but here in NJ we can get a lot of rain. So what the barrier does is prevent the interlocking pads from warping over time due to the water vapor.
