Magnolia Bakery Inc

Ever since that goofy SNL skit about the Narnia movie hit the ‘Net like a virus and has spawned numerous parody international versions (1) (2) (3) , I’ve been incredibly curious about this particular Greenwich Village bakery, which specializes in cupcakes. There are certainly quite a number of other cupcake places in NYC, but Magnolia is the original.

Storefont on Bleecker

The store attracts serious crowds, especially at 10PM, the last hour or so before closing.

Trays of sugar and butter icing cupcakes, quickly disappearing.

In addition to cupcakes, Magnolia makes full sized cakes, pies, brownies and various kinds of cookie bars and puddings as well

Cupcake closeup. If you buy a bunch of these, they stay fine in the fridge overnight, but the frosting will harden — just nuke them in the microwave for 10 seconds. Nothing beats a warm cupcake with soft, buttery frosting. Mmmmm.

If you’re bringing home cupcakes for your cupcake, you might also want to visit Condomania down the block, because you’ll probably need some.

So what did you think of them? I’ve read there are much better cupcakes in NYC.

I enjoyed it. The frosting is a bit sweet, but they are very good cupcakes. The other things they make are very good too and I actually enjoyed some of the other stuff better like their cookie bars and their banana pudding.
