NJ Dining: Los Almendros

Los Almendros
96 S. Washington Avenue
Bergenfield. NJ

Like Pollos Mario in Hackensack, Los Almendros in Bergenfield is one of the number of Colombian restaurants popping up in the local area. Almendros is two months old and serves a variety Colombian, Peruvian and Central American dishes.

Main Dining Room

This is a Jugo Fresco with Passion Fruit (Maracuja) made with water. It can also be made with milk.

Colombiana Soda. Its similar to Inca Cola and other cola champagne sodas.

Chicken Empanada

If you order a “Ceviche Colombiana” you get shrimp cocktail with “Salsa Rosa” which is mayonnaise and ketchup combined. It tastes a lot better than it sounds.

Tostones, fried plantains.

This is a Bandeja platter which has Chicharrones (Deep fried fatty Slab Bacon), Morcilla Sausage, Fried Eggs, Steak, Beans, Rice and Maduros (Sweet Fried Plantains)

This is a chaufa, a fried rice with shrimp.

This is a half chicken A La Braza.

Wow. Those chicharrones look amazing/like a cardiologist’s worst nightmare.

In Colombia we say patacones not tostones (thats more of a puerto rican thing)

    Great pics.

Is the chicken empanada billed as Colombian?

Its not like the empandas I grew up with (see this for pics http://nikas-culinaria.blogspot.com/2005/12/how-to-make-colombian-empanadas.html)
