New England: Boston’s Big Dig

The Boston Central Artery/Tunnel construction project, otherwise known as the Big Dig, is probably one of the most ambitious if not the most ambitious urban renewal projects in modern history.

Last week I stayed in Woburn, MA, which is about 16 miles west of Boston on I-93, and I had the pleasure of driving into downtown Boston every day and experiencing the new tunnel system (click for Google Video). While I wasn't particularly crazy about the brutal rush hour traffic on I-93, I really did get a kick out of the new Zakim bridge.

Boston's new Zakim Bunker Hill/Charles River Bridge, named after civic leader Leonard P. Zakim, is not just an incredible marvel of engineering but its also extremely beautiful  as well. I could almost kick myself for not getting a shot or a video driving across it late at night, because each of the suspension cables is lit up bright blue and it looks like laser beams shooting down from the sky. Maybe in a couple of weeks I will get you guys a new video when I come back in July.

Seen leaving Boston on I-93 North.
